What
is Certification as an Expert in EEG and Clinical Neurophysiology?
Certification by the American
Board of EEG and Clinical Neurophsyiology (ABEN) is for M.D.s only,
however ABEN offers essentially the same M.D. examination to Ph.D.'s
who are members of the EEG
Clinical Neuroscience Society (ECNS). To pass the examination,
both the M.D. and the Ph.D. test taker must: 1- Have completed a minimum
of supervised training covering conventional EEG and QEEG, 2- passing
a 4 hour written examination in conventional EEG, 3- passing a 2 hour
written examination in QEEG and, 4- passing an oral examination in which
10 different EEG and/or EP records are orally evaluated. An expert, whether an M.D. or Ph.D.,
must be able to explain why they made the edits, what the reliability
and validity of the examination is, what features in the conventional
EEG are present or not present in the QEEG and the reasons why he/she
rendered a clinical impression and/or discussion.
What is Certification
for QEEG Technician or QEEGT?
The technical understanding
of EEG and QEEG requires specialized training. For an EEG and QEEG Technologist
certification (QEEG-T) knowledge and experience as to the basics of
electrode placements, electrode references, montage selection, elimination
of artifacts, recording procedures, patient's state of mind, etc. are
certified by a written and oral examination.
What is Certification
for EEG Biofeedback or BCIA-EEG?
The Biofeedback Certification Institute of America or BCIA offers
certification to the broad universe of APA approved biofeedback clinical
therapies, including EEG. The
sub-specialty of BCIA-EEG emphasizes the EEG/EP aspects of biofeedback
as it relates to the larger universe of clinical symptoms and treatments
within the area of biofeedback.
