Who can purchase the T.O.V.A?

There are two versions of the T.O.V.A.: Screening and Clinical.

Licensed clinicians (e.g., physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurse clinicians, licensed clinical social workers, etc.) may purchase and use the Clinical T.O.V.A.

What are the Computer Requirements ("System Requirements") for the T.O.V.A. 7.3?

• Windows 2000/XP Installation Requirements:

  • PC running Windows 2000 or XP
  • DOS-compatible parallel port (this does not include USB parallel port adapters)
  • Printing requires any Windows-compatible printer
  • 5MB or more free on disk
  • The T.O.V.A. 7.3 requires administrative privileges to install and run

• Windows 95/98/ME Installation Requirements:

  • PC running Windows 95, 98, 98SE, or ME (Windows ME requires the use of a boot floppy disk or CD-ROM)
  • DOS-compatible parallel port (this does not include USB parallel port adapters)
  • Printing requires a DOS-compatible parallel port printer
  • 5MB or more free on disk

• DOS Installation Requirements:

  • PC with x386 or better processor running MS DOS 6.22, or FreeDOS 0.9 or later
  • DOS-compatible parallel port (this does not include USB parallel port adapters)
  • Printing requires a DOS-compatible parallel port printer
  • 5MB or more free on disk
  • VGA or better graphics card
  • 2 MB of memory (450 KB free conventional memory, 1 MB of XMS memory)

Information on Insurance Coverage

The T.O.V.A. has been approved for reimbursement by many, but not all insurance companies. However, approval is on a case by case basis. The T.O.V.A.- A (auditory version) is too new to be approved for reimbursement but should be handled similarly. Billing can be submitted (and may be reimbursed at different rates) under two different diagnostic and procedural codes, depending on which diagnosis is used. Historically, reimbursement has been easier to obtain under the medical diagnosis for Static Encephalopathy (348.3) with the procedural code for neurobehavioral status exam (96115) or the diagnosis of Organic Bran Syndrome (310.9) using the same procedural code (96115). Coverage for these medical conditions can be reimbursed directly to the physician or psychologist. If you use the psychiatric/psychological diagnostic coeds for ADHD (314.00 and 314.01) and procedural codes for psychological testing (96100 and 96100-22) or neuropsychological testing (96117), coverage may be restricted and in some states, reimbursement may be made only to a licensed psychologist. If you use both the T.O.V.A. and the T.O.V.A.-A. with the same patient, you will want to explicitly state that fact perhaps with an explanatory statement like, "The T.O.V.A. and the T.O.V.A.-A. (the visual and auditory versions, respectively) were both administered to help diagnose attentional processing in both visual and auditory modes". You may want to consult with the insurance company to determine which code to use. If you use the 96117 category, be sure to bill for the challenge test under 96117-22 if it is administered the same day as the baseline test. Otherwise, third party payers may assume that you mistakenly are billing twice for one test. The following are CPT codes that have been historically used with T.O.V.A.
