Exclusively Measuring and Training
The Three Dimensions of Mental Processing

Neureka!: Responds to clear, vivid, full awareness.

• Evoked by being aware of yourself and what just happened to you
• Feels like really waking up—“Aha!”
• Creates a very complete view of your experience
• Sensitive to moments of reinforcement—“What did I just do right? I want to remember it.”
• Related to comprehension,  understanding, appreciation of yourself and others, gratitude.
• Esthetic and enjoyable.  It just feels blissful!

This new mind power completes the three fundamental dimensions of mental processing the Peak Achievement Trainer can measure and enhance: Focus, Alertness and Awareness.

Focus: 'Single-pointedness' of concentration on
             a perception, thought, or image.
Alertness/Arousal: Results from mental
             effort or interest.
Awareness: Clarity and understanding.

Neureka is a new way of detecting and training the 40 Hertz rhythm

  • The 40 Hz. is a special type of gamma rhythm, beating at about 40 cycles a second (Hz.). "Gamma" refers to any EEG rhythm above 30 Hz.
  • The 40 Hz. rhythm scans the brain, putting together the brain's response to parts of an event into a complete whole. It has been called the "event binding rhythm". One type of 40 Hz. rhythm originates from the center of the brain--the intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus, and sweeps from back to front, 40 times a second.
  • A report in Nature proposed, based on EEG data, that increased 40 Hz. output and similarity of the 40 Hz. wave shapes between sites (coherence) on the cortex is responsible for associative learning. The formation of associative memories requires this close time relationship (coherence) between the gamma rhythms in the parts of the cortex that are involved in the brain's response.
  • 40 Hz. amplitude is decreased in learning disabilities and Alzheimers disease.
  • The Peak Achievement Trainer measures a combination of gamma output and coherence at the midline of the scalp. The EEG of Tibetan Buddhist monks features enhanced gamma output and coherence. Davidson also found that the amplitude of prefrontal gamma was related to the clarity of the monks' meditation.
  • Neureka! minimizes the influence of EMG and Focus, which severely contaminate the filtered 35-45 Hz. band.
  • Neureka! training produced a remarkable improvement in the Integrated Visual and Auditory Attention Test in a small study--1.5 standard deviations in four sessions!
  • The 40 Hz. thalamocortical rhythm should enhance memory consolidation by promoting calcium influx into cortical cells.
  • The 40 Hz. rhythm typically occurs in short bursts, which look like spindles. If you can teach someone to enhance or sustain their bursts, and/or increase their occurrence, this should improve their memory and subsequent performance.

Focus: 'Single-pointedness' of concentration on a perception, thought, or image.

  • Doesn’t matter which type of object
  • Can be relaxed, very alert, or in-between
  • Responds negatively to distraction
  • Probably dopamine related
  • Easier to sustain

Alertness/Arousal: Results from mental effort or interest.

  • More intense stimulation, “on the edge”, excitement
  • Summoning the resources to respond
  • Associated with tightening muscles, chest breathing
  • Potentially stressful and fatiguing
  • Related to stimulation of the Reticular Activating System
  • “Fight or Flight”
  • Probably related to noradrenalin
  • Enhances emotion
  • Hard to sustain—need to build the capacity by training and minimize utilization
  • Underarousal is associated with Attention
  • Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
