Did you know that the "fresh" water you use might be contaminated? The
clearest-looking, best-tasting water can be unsafe for human consumption.
Microorganisms present in the water supply may cause infectious hepatitis,
dysentery, infectious jaundice, typhoid fever, and a host of other diseases.
And, even if your water is safe today, it may be contaminated tomorrow. What are Microorganisms and are some of them
harmful? Microorganisms
consist of the following 5 groups: viruses, algae, fungi, protozoa and
bacteria. Certain microorganisms are disease carrying – referred to as
pathogens – and can be found in drinking water. How do pathogens enter my
water supply? Human
and animal waste are primary sources of bacterial contamination. These
pathogens generally enter drinking water supplies through runoff, seepage
and floods. Are there tests that indicate the presence
of pathogens in my water?
Yes. You can call the
health department to get information and have your water tested. Do I need to pre-treat the water? It
is highly recommended that the water be pre-treated. The UV systems are
most effective when the water has been pre-filtered prior to treatment.
This is because pre-filters remove large particles, water cysts, odors
and tastes. These impurities can interfere with the transmission of UV
