Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD is one of the conditions that have raised a lot of controversies to both the public and clinicians. It is one of the most complex conditions similar to Attention Disorder with Hypersensitivity (ADHD). Both of them are caused by neurological dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex in the brain. This part of the brain is highly essential; it plays crucial roles in critical thinking, attention span, impulse control, solving problems, learning from experience, feeling and expressing emotions, organization, judgment ability, self-monitoring, perseverance, forward thinking, and interaction with the limbic system.
The major signs exhibited by those suffering from ADD will include; lack of attention, poor or lack of judgment, not learning from experience, lack of impulse control, distractibility, disorganization, poor time management, lack of perseverance, short-term loss of memory, hyperactivity, procrastination, misperceptions, and social and test anxiety.
ADD is a condition that comes in six forms; Temporal, Inattentive, Over focused, Classic hyperactive, Ring of Fire, and Limbic. Theses types have some common characteristics though they vary in symptoms and treatment. All the types share the common feature of impairment of prefrontal cortex of the brain. The most common treatment to ADD include; the use of antidepressants like Strattera and Wellbutrin. These can calm the limbic system, and increase dopamine. Secondly, use of stimulants. They focus and calm the individual. Thirdly, use of anti-depressant and a stimulant can be effective. Drug side effects should be monitored.
