T.O.V.A. Test for ADD/ADHD
TEST OF VARIABLES OF ATTENTION (Version 8) for Windows XP, Vista (all versions), Windows 7 (all versions), and Mac OS XThe T.O.V.A. is the world’s most widely used objective measure of attention. With over 200 published studies and presentations, it remains the standard for objective assessment of attention in clinical practice and research on attention disorders, traumatic brain injury, and other conditions in which attention is affected.
The all-new T.O.V.A. 8 further advances the state of the art in continuous performance tests with an integrated Symptom Exaggeration Index (to identify possible cases of symptom exaggeration or malingering), integrated cross-test comparisons (to identify treatment effects), reporting of important new reaction time distribution parameters (from the Ex-Gaussian reaction time distribution), Attention Performance Index (comparing the results with identified cases of ADHD), and compatibility with Apple Mac OS X and Windows 7 and Vista.
The two separate tests, T.O.V.A. and T.O.V.A.-A.®, measure visual or auditory processing, respectively, and feature a gender-stratified normative base of over 4,000 children and adults. The T.O.V.A. is highly reliable, cost effective, and easily administered, providing relevant and accurate measures of attention and impulsivity and response to treatment.
With its unparalleled timing accuracy, the T.O.V.A. is extraordinarily sensitive to the effects of treatment, including medication and other therapies, and can be used to accurately determine optimal treatment responses, thereby minimizing treatment side effects and improving treatment compliance.
The T.O.V.A. stimuli are non-language-based and culture free (two simple geometric stimuli or two simple tones), and help professionals rule out attention problems and discriminate attention disorders from learning disabilities while minimizing cultural differences in assessing attention. The T.O.V.A. is used in over 60 countries around the world.
The T.O.V.A. test is deliberately long (21.6 minutes) and simple to effectively test attention variables. The “go/no-go” response paradigm avoids confounding variables such as complex information processing and memory.
- Clinical and technical support is available.
- Automatic free software updates.
Key Features of the T.O.V.A.
- Measure attention and monitor treatment of attention disorders, including ADHD, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and other CNS disorders
- Gender-based norms from 4 - 80+ years
- Sufficient duration (21.6) to “catch” individuals who can partially compensate and attend 10-15 minutes
- Standardized 10.8 minute tests for 4 and 5-year-olds
- Unique two-part paradigm with both infrequent stimulus and frequent stimulus conditions to measure attention, impulsivity, habituation to condition, and response inhibition
- A specially designed, standardized, and highly accurate (±1 ms) electronic microswitch to avoid inherent variability of keyboards and mouse responses
- Symptom Exaggeration Index to flag possible cases of symptom exaggeration or malingering
- Attention Performance Index (comparing the results with identified cases of ADHD).
- View and print report immediately after testing
- Compare results--up to 4 reports at once
- USB port required
- Internet connection recommended
- External monitor recommended for laptops

Information on Insurance Coverage
The T.O.V.A. ™ has been approved for reimbursement by many, but not all insurance companies. However, approval is on a case by case basis. The T.O.V.A. ™- A (auditory version) is too new to be approved for reimbursement but should be handled similarly. Billing can be submitted (and may be reimbursed at different rates) under two different diagnostic and procedural codes, depending on which diagnosis is used. Historically, reimbursement has been easier to obtain under the medical diagnosis for Static Encephalopathy (348.3) with the procedural code for neurobehavioral status exam (96115) or the diagnosis of Organic Bran Syndrome (310.9) using the same procedural code (96115). Coverage for these medical conditions can be reimbursed directly to the physician or psychologist. If you use the psychiatric/psychological diagnostic coeds for ADHD (314.00 and 314.01) and procedural codes for psychological testing (96100 and 96100-22) or neuropsychological testing (96117), coverage may be restricted and in some states, reimbursement may be made only to a licensed psychologist. If you use both the T.O.V.A. ™ and the T.O.V.A. ™-A. with the same patient, you will want to explicitly state that fact perhaps with an explanatory statement like, "The T.O.V.A. ™ and the T.O.V.A. ™-A. (the visual and auditory versions, respectively) were both administered to help diagnose attentional processing in both visual and auditory modes". You may want to consult with the insurance company to determine which code to use. If you use the 96117 category, be sure to bill for the challenge test under 96117-22 if it is administered the same day as the baseline test. Otherwise, third party payers may assume that you mistakenly are billing twice for one test. The following are CPT codes that have been historically used with T.O.V.A. ™ These codes are consolidated into the "CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEMS ASSESSMENTS/TESTING" (e.g., neuro-cognitive, mental status, speech testing): of the 1998 CPT Code Manual:
|Developmental Testing, Limited
|Neurobehavioral Status Exam
|Neuropsychological Testing Battery
